BACK TO THE FUTURE!

Charter guests often look for more than a sundeck and cocktail on a super yacht now, and there are some seriously exciting toys to be found on board. This video showcases one of the most impressive toys and eye-catching toys out there - the aquatic Hoverboard by ZR. Whizzing about on one of these would certainly make you the envy of the marina, and looks extremely good fun!

CHARTER BROKER SARAH FRASER AT THE NEW YORK YACHT CLUB REGATTA

Cecil Wright & Partners charter broker Sarah Fraser attended the 160th New York Yacht Club Regatta last weekend on board TEMPUS FUGIT. Read on for her report and to find out how the yacht fared in the racing...

Regarded as one of New England’s most renowned sporting events, the 160th New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta at Newport attracted thousands of sailors to Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound last weekend. I was fortunate to be invited back to be part of the team aboard TEMPUS FUGIT, the beautiful, 90’ sloop designed by Humphreys Yacht Design and constructed by Arkin Pruva Yachts in Turkey. With her classic looks and varnished mahogany hull, she turned heads and was reminiscent of a bygone era of J Class yachting and in keeping with the grandeur of Newport.

America’s oldest and longest running regatta continued its illustrious legacy of competition and camaraderie. Our hosts at the New York Yacht Club looked after us beautifully and we were wined and dined at their palatial summer club house, Harbour Court. The New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844 and was the keeper of the America’s Cup from 1851 to 1983, and in 2005 and 2011.

Racing started on Friday with the Around-the-Island Race, and the fleet was made up of an eclectic mix of modern racers, classics, 12 metres and cruising yachts – a beautiful sight! Challenging conditions of fog, rain and light winds affected the entire fleet and the course was shortened having got less than half way around the island. As the weekend progressed, the conditions improved with sunshine and slightly more wind. Erbil Arken, our esteemed owner and my host for the weekend, was very pleased with our results – a first and a second. He enjoyed it so much that he has entered for the Newport Bucket in August, clearly bitten by the bug of yacht racing!

TEMPUS FUGIT is the first of the Tempus range and plans are afoot to build a 170’ – I can’t imagine how beautiful she will be.

THE SUPERYACHT AWARDS 2014

MADAME GU was triumphant at the prestigious World SuperYacht Awards 2014, held in Amsterdam over the weekend, winning two Neptune Trophies. The first was for “Best Displacement Motor Yacht of 2,000gt and above” and the second was for “Superyacht of the Year 2014” - possibly the highest accolade within the yachting industry.

For Cecil-Wright, it is a very proud moment. Chris was instrumental in the planning, design and completion of the project, having sold the concept of the new build to her owner prior to starting Cecil Wright and Partners. With the yacht being built by Feadship, and the interior and exterior designed by Andrew Winch and his team, the end result is a truly exceptional yacht.

Charter Broker and keen sailor Sarah Fraser has been on board a yacht racing in the Loro Piana Regatta in the British Virgin Islands.

Here Sarah tells us about her adventure, the racing and what makes the British Virgin Islands so special.

'I was fortunate enough to be invited to race on-board TEMPUS FUGIT at the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous in the British Virgin Islands.  Erbil Arkin, the owner of TEMPUS FUGIT, is new to the Superyacht Regatta scene and while no stranger to having fun on the water, he had never experienced racing with a highly professional crew.  Erbil, who hails from Northern Cyprus and Britain, was a jovial and generous host and highly motivated to make a good showing with his stunningly beautiful, all wooden, 90’ sloop, built in Turkey.  Erbil had in fact just achieved one of his lifetime ambitions by sailing across the Atlantic.

On arrival at the Yacht Club Costa Smerelda’s winter base in Virgin Gorda, I was met by the hubbub of crew preparation; the dock piled high with sails, ropes and kit.  Every yacht trying to lighten the load ready for the racing.  Amidst the large aluminium sailing yachts was TEMPUS FUGIT, my racing machine for the week.  She stuck out from the crowd with her gleaming mahogany hull, a true “spirit of tradition” yacht.  It was soon to become apparent that she was not only a beautiful work of art, but extremely swift.  Her hull form and huge rig designed by Humphreys Yacht Design clearly showed off her moves.

My first impression was “Oh God, no guard rails”.  How was I going to stay in the boat!  After a practice of “Man Overboard” on our first day by one of the dashing foredeck crew, I realised I wouldn’t be left behind but I certainly wouldn’t be very popular if I fell over during a race. The regatta is run by YCCS in their usual slick Italian way and we were set interesting courses around beautiful islands with lots of action.  The Yacht Club is only reachable by boat and is a little corner of Italy in the Caribbean.  I couldn’t resist a “proper” coffee in the mornings overlooking the yachts and the infinity pool.  Nothing was too much trouble and we were all looked after very well.  The fleet was made up of 20 yachts from 70’ to 220’, old and new, fast and not so fast.  The beauty of the Superyacht rule is that all these yachts can compete on an even keel.  With our fine crew and slick manoeuvres, we won our class on Day 1 to the absolute delight of all of us and particularly Erbil.  We finished a very respectable 3rd overall in our class.  Congratulations to MOONBIRD with her striking new black rig who won our class.

The races lasted 3 or 4 hours and the afternoons were time to explore the beautiful islands.  Snorkelling over a nearby coral reef, we saw lobsters, squid, rays and hundreds of brightly coloured small fish.  A swim off the white sandy beach on Prickly Pear Island which was deserted and paddle boarding around Saba Rock were highlights. The British Virgin Islands are, without doubt, the most perfect place to sail, race and enjoy.  So good, I have just booked my flights to return for Christmas.'

If you would like to charter a yacht for one of the summer regattas in the Mediterranean, please contact Sarah on sarah@cecilwright.com.

This week has seen three of the Cecil Wright team head out of the office and around the world for yacht visits, projects and networking.

During some downtime, he has been competing in a clay shooting competition, alongside double Olympic Gold medalist Peter Wilson.

Charter broker Claire Van Der Vorm is in the Seychelles to visit the world class fast cruising sloop RED DRAGON, a fabulous new addition to the charter fleet.
